the action or practice of moving livestock from one grazing ground to another in a seasonal cycle, typically to lowlands in winter and highlands in summer.

The Schafabtrieb, a centuries old tradition in Alpenwelt Karwendel, the Bavarian Alps, through the village of Mittenwald. The deep pastoralist culture of bringing the sheep down from the summer Alpine meadows to their winter valley entailed much bleating, a cacophony of livestock bells, and beer drinking.
