Double Negative

“There is nothing there, yet it is still a sculpture.”
-Michael Heizer

Nevada, 2007 – A pilgrimage to one of the most famous Land Art pieces in the world.

Michael Heizer’s Double Negative. Referring to the negative space created by the displacement of 244,000 tons of rock. The presence of the absence. Completed in 1969.

With nothing around for miles, only the clear yet distant sounds of gunfire from a nearby shooting range (or improvised shooting range?). The second cut was clearly viewed from the vantage point of standing at the first. It was not easy to find, and after the wild goose chase to find it in the days of flip-phones and geo-coordinates, harder to tear away.
